iSclinical Seminar and SPF to love

Such a beautiful day yesterday of listening and advanced training.

I had the pleasure of attending an advanced training seminar with iSclinical. In a beautiful location, which used to be a private gentlemen’s club. Carved wood, beautiful chandeliers. Gorgeous antique window frames.

Every Esthetician’s primary concern is to offer an exceptional experience to each individual client. Educating them on Skincare and the differences in products and why one brand or type may work best, learning their personal skincare goals, performing professional treatments and recommending home care and proper use there of, sometimes even guiding them when an unapparent lifestyle ritual could be causing damage. Can you think of one of the main lifestyles that makes every Esthetician cringe? Yup, daily unprotected UV exposure.

One product, every Esthetician will agree that every client needs is Sunscreen, AKA: Sunblock, SPF, Sun defense, Physical Spf.....

So what’s the difference?!

Here’s the answer: Once upon a time blocks were designed to filter out UVB, these are the shorter wavelengths that visibly cause the temporary burn/deep tan. They come and go, and come and go. This leads to acute premature aging with noticeable symptoms of imbalanced surface lipids, dehydrated, inflamed and reactive skin.

Sunscreens on the other hand were developed to filter UVA the longer “aging rays” which penetrate deeply causing chronic premature aging day after day of UV exposure without UV protection. This is mainly caused by getting in your car, driving to work, going to lunch, going to work, going to your car and driving home. Not to mention the blue lights from your devices and the fluorescents in your office. You do not see the effects and damage  of these rays until years later and this is what I explain as chronic premature aging of the skin.

Now days Sunscreens and Blocks are blended to give you broad spectrum coverage. So the name block vs screen has little differentiating value. You will also see them marketed as Sun defense, SPF of course, Sun Protection and many more. Still sounds confusing? That’s because it is. So many brands have made millions of dollars in the “sun-care” industry. Coppertone was a runner up in 2017 with 118.2 M in sales. To say the least they have a lot invested in keeping you confused.

The simplest way to understand why and how to utilize a sunscreen is this:

Seek a broad Spectrum, Physical SPF. This will insure the products are physical blocks such as Zinc and or Titanium Dioxide. Zinc is soothing, soothes acne and inflammation, and minimizes bacteria on the skin. Naturally making it a great choice. Titanium Dioxide does what Zinc does, though it may be irritating to a small amount of people.

Why are these fantastic?! Essentially they prevent aging of the skin. Shielding the skin from both UVA & UVB, they are moisture binding, can be developed to be “unseen” no white residue, though many people relate Zinc to the white sheen there are many luxurious textures and colors from matte to gloss, moisture to oil absorption and powders to mists, creams and liquid serums too.

I generally use a moisturizing SPF, followed up with mineral makeup. A clean mineral line will add yet another layer of protection if you were planning on wearing makeup to begin with. I choose: Jane Iredale, 100 Percent Pure, Hynt Beauty, & Image water resistant SPF foundation. If you skip the makeup you could reapply with your primary SPF or there’s the option of a powder. One I recommend is iSclincal powdered SPF. Back from hibernations these powdery perfectionist protect with a little dusting of their magic powder. Use the translucent powder to reapply through out the day and you’re set to go.

My favorite SPF + Moisture are iSclinical SPF with Extremeozyme. This SPF is in a league of it’s own. The Extremeozyme prevents dna damage and repairs, it moisturizes and protects. This SPF is a one size fits all and can even be worn in the evening.

Eclipse SPF 50 Perfect Tint, iSclinical SPF 30 as it has your physical block and other ingredients to calm redness, plus a little added antioxidant (Incase you forgot your proheal that day). Next is Skinscriptrx SPF 30, it’s amazing. It’s matte, undetectable and a great starting point for most clients new to Sunscreen and Skincare.

If there’s anything I would like for you to take away from this post, it would be the value of protecting your skin daily (rain, sleet, sun, waves) & to reapply. My exact words to my clients are this “Sunscreen is the holy grail of anti aging” the faster you accept this, this faster all of your other skincare and makeup will begin working to its optimal ability.

As always, please comment with questions and feedback.
